Cool Touch Endo Venous Laser (CTEV) from USA is India’s First 1320nm Nd:YAG technology installed at LakshyaKiran 2 1/2 years back & till date it’s the only system in the country. On one hand, we have an ever increasing population having varicosities of leg veins, due to more sedentary life style coupled with lack of exercise. On the other hand there isn’t an effective surgical way to tackle the problem satisfactorily.

Endo Venous laser surgery started in late 1990s with Diode technology & has gone through 810, 940 & 980 nm wavelengths during its refinement. These wavelengths of Diode have strong affinity to de-oxy hemoglobin, therefore they heat blood & conducted heat reaching the vein wall leads to its damage and closure.

On the other hand, 1320 nm wavelength of the Nd:YAG laser is directly absorbed by the water content of the vein wall, almost bypassing the blood. Therefore, it very gently closes the vein without heating the blood. It is in fact, so gentle that the procedure is performed under local peri-venous anesthesia and the patient walks out of room at the end of the procedure.

I perform CTEV procedures in OT under continuous Color Doppler guidance from a specially trained sonologist. There are no sutures, only puncture marks & follow-up is limited to Doppler check up. This makes it convenient even for the patients who come from far away places.
