What causes acne?
Acne commonly affects teenagers more than other people. This is because during puberty, a lot of hormonal changes take place in the body. In males, the hormone testosterone is converted into dihydrotesterone which is responsible for excessive oil production. The skin pores become blocked by this excess oil. As the skin pores are blocked, the skin cannot get rid of the dead skin cells from the body. These dead skin cells remain on the skin for a long time and lead to acne breakouts. It is observed that people who have oily skin tend to suffer from acne more than others. Excess oil in the skin is not the only reason for acne breakouts however. Bacteria and dirt present in the skin can also lead to acne.
Type of acne
Acne is of two different types – inflamed acne and non-inflamed acne. Non-inflamed acne is that which is termed as blackheads and whiteheads. When a skin pore gets clogged with dirt and bacteria, it is known as a whitehead. When this pore opens up, the oil present in the pore is oxidised which causes it to turn black. If the body is not able to get rid of the bacteria, it causes inflammation which eventually leads to acne.
